Cake and a baby - what a combo! For my son's second birthday we gave him a slice of chocolate cake and ice cream. He was literally bouncing off of the walls with the sugar injection. But what a great time!
I really like the design of the little girl's shirt. Way cool.

I hope this answers your question:-I used some special effects in illustrator such as drop shadow(on the mother bird) and distort/glass(the background). I also made some swatches and layed them over solid colour(trunk).
