I went to the doctor, a dermatologist this time (my internist said that he was good at toes...huh???). The first idea was to put a hole in the toenail via a hot pin. But he thought that if he just trimmed the nail really close, he could get to where the blood was trapped. Standing up was excruciating because all the blood would rush to my foot and all that blood pressure was causing all the pain. Anyway, he did it and it was not too painful and it drained. Yeah, walking is possible again without pain. Wearing a shoe...well, that's still a couple of days away.
The good news side of all this was that my kids jumped in and took care of me, like the (apparently) mature adults they have become. Bonnie insisted on doing grocery shopping and cooking. Adam announced he would be taking me to the doctor and pushed the wheelchair from the parking lot into the hospital. He sat in the office with me and even came into the exam room and waited, patiently taking the part that I had always played. Ross would come into my room (after he got home from school) to tell me about his day and to make sure I had everything I needed. It was very impressive to see how much they could be the responsible ones.
I can now get back to normal, whatever that is...
I think young adults love that role--for a time anyway. They want to show that they are capable, caring and adult. I hope this procedure helps you heal faster and better. (remember that I would be happy to drain any of those beer bottles for you, especially if they're Hefeweisen!)

I'm so glad you found some relief for your pain. And remember: put the beer bottle on a coaster, not on your toe.
