It's always frustrating when I come away from a book with such mixed feelings. Jane Hamilton is one of those writers who feels she is writing literary fiction and that anything that smacks of commercialism is less than. But I disagree on both counts. I've read her work and I think it's commercial - upscale commercial, but commercial nonetheless. Nothing wrong with that but for some folks that's the ultimate insult. And I'm long past the time where I read something just because it's supposed to be important. A good story can come in many forms -literary or commercial. Good luck on the next read!
